A young New Yorker's love for Hollywood's golden era is tested when she must choose between the man of her dreams and a man she's never dreamed of.

Julia Starr (Mudge) is a young advertising associate looking for love in present-day New York City. She longs for the romance and glamour shown in the movies and music of the 1920's and 1930's. After many disappointments, she meets Joe (Coffeey) in a sudden thunderstorm. However, Julia quickly realizes her "modern-day Fred Astaire" turns out to be anything but, then she meets...his brother (Stamberg).
Could he finally hold the key to all her dreams?

A fun, romantic triangle ensues and Julia seeks the counsel of her older neighbor Ruth (Moreno) and wisecracking friend MaryAnn (Hurd) to decide if true love and happiness can be found when you let go and simply PLAY IT BY EAR.
